Gradings

There are nine kyu or student grades, divided into three grades each for white, blue and brown belts. There is no rule established about when you should attempt a grading, but as a general guide, white belt grades could be attempted after a month's training (from the start of the previous grading), blue belt grades after at least three months each, and brown belt grades could take six months or more each. Generally it is better to over prepare than to attempt a grading that you are not ready for. Gradings are held when enough students are ready which can sometimes mean that a grading is not held for six months or more.

It is possible to do a double grading, in other words, jump more than one step. This is likely if you are a beginner and there has not been a grading for some time, or if you have substantial martial arts experience and are picking things up quickly. However, as you progress the gradings get much tougher, and it is not recommended for blue or brown belt gradings.

Between white and black belt most people will fail a grading. This does not mean you are an inferior person. Many people, having failed a grading feel embarrassed and will never show their face around the club again. This is sad because almost everyone will fail a grading sooner or later. Better to come back, work hard and pass with flying colours next time.
