Zazen meditation

To perform Zazen sit in the seiza position. If this is extremely uncomfortable you may sit cross legged, but it is worthwhile persisting with seiza. Your back should be straight, as if a string was pulling upwards from the crown of your head. Your tongue should rest on the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth. Make your out breath twice as long as your in breath. As a rule of thumb, in for a slow count of three, out for a slow count of six. Breathe in by moving your diaphragm downwards, and filling your lungs from the bottom up. Concentrate only on your breathing - this is easier said than done. When your attention wanders away from breathing don't get side-tracked into thinking about how you lost concentration, simply resume concentrating on your breathing. There is a lot more to Zazen, but this is a good start.

In the words of Taisen Deshimaru Roshi, your posture should be like a tiger ready to pounce, not that of a sleeping pig. Let your posture be full of energy. Otherwise it is like flat beer opened the night before.
